Replaced a battery several times in your car or truck, but it keeps running out? Don't worry, you're not alone! Many people assume that a car that won't start with a new battery just needs another new battery, but that's not always the case. In this video, Sue will teach you how to diagnose the problem and fix it yourself, saving you time and money. She'll explain why the battery light on your dashboard doesn't necessarily mean your battery needs replacing and show you how to check your alternator with a voltage meter. But before we get into that, we'll cover the basics, like checking for loose terminals and corrosion. We'll also explain how to properly maintain your battery by checking its acid levels and using a hydrometer. By the end of this video, you'll be able to replace the one part that's causing your car not to start, get back on the road, and save money by doing it yourself!

🔧 List of tools used:
• Battery Acid Hydrometer
• Battery Terminal Brush

The video title says, “Car with new battery won’t start, ” yet most of the tests require the car to start. How does this help when your car won’t start? That’s the entire reason I watched this video.

Great video. A lot of people including myself would have changed the alternator, but showing us what to check before spending close to $300 on an alternator was great information.

Very good advice, always check the alternator.

Lots of good info here! Thank you for taking the time to share. If I may be so bold as to offer a critique; I didn't hear you tell us to check fuse continuity in ohms. Looking at the video it looks like you checked the fuse for its voltage. Stay safe!

Goid video! Sounds like what you need to check is the engine oil level. Those lifters sounded like they were DRY!

She was great in explaining the alternator enjoyed it.

I once went through 4 alternators trying everything before giving up and took the car to a dealer- a bad sensor was preventing recharge of the battery. A low charging system can cause running problems too until it dies

That was super helpful, thanks! As a not English speaker I’m struggling with understanding what my mechanic trying to explain me, so this video is my homework before going to the service 😅

When using a hydrometer, you need to draw in enough solution (known as electrolyte). There is a line very near the top of the hydrometer which shows how much electrolyte you need to get an accurate reading. In the video the indicator was floating at the top of the electrolyte, limiting it's travel.
Also, the hydrometer needs to be held straight (vertical)
You have already determined that the alternator is putting out a charging voltage, rendering checking the fuse a moot excercise. If the alternator is NOT charging, then test the fuse before condeming the alternator.
Low voltage at idle can also indicate a load on the battery which the alternator can not keep up with at low idle.
You cannot to a voltage drop test unless there is current flowing through the conducter, which means alternator running.
A voltage regulator controls the maximum output voltage of the alternator. control the voltage, and you control the current (amps) output of the alternator.
Please, A-1, if you're going to put out a video, use a knowledable auto technician.

Good video! One comment: you said the battery isn’t doing anything when the engine is running because the alternator is powering everything. The batter still acts like a buffer/surge suppressor, which is why they say to not drive a car without a battery. The battery still protects the numerous sensitive modules and sensors.

My 2008 gmc sierra 1500 starts good. I decided to replace the battery due to age of 4yrs with a new battery. Installed it and now it won't crank. So I am putting my charger on it.

your chanel put good content but in this video there was 2 mistake, the fuse should be check on the ohm setting not the volt, and for the ground side testing of the alt should be tested engine running for voltage drop .tks good video

One really common problem is leaking valve cover gasket dripping oil on the alternator. I have seen too many covered with oil from the leak and go bad. Putting a new ine will go bad shortly after until thenoil leak is fixed
