Try this Halloween science trick at home!

You’ll need: pumpkin, hydrogen peroxide, dry yeast, dish soap, food coloring, warm water
1: Add food coloring and 1 tablespoon dish soap inside a carved pumpkin.
2: Pour in ½ cup hydrogen peroxide.
3: Mix 1 tablespoon dry yeast and 3 tablespoons of warm water in a small dish.
4: Pour the yeast mixture into the pumpkin. Watch what happens!

(Safety tip! Grownup supervision is required, and make sure to wear eye protection.)

Blame this poor pumpkin’s upset tummy on the yeast.

Yeast is a type of fungus, and it’s normally used by people to make bread rise and drinks ferment. But in our puking pumpkin, the yeast is there to take part in an explosive chemical reaction with the hydrogen peroxide.

A chemical in the yeast rips apart the hydrogen peroxide molecules to create water plus oxygen gas. This reaction happens very quickly, and as all that oxygen bubbles through the dish soap, it shoots up and makes a thick foam that turned our jack-‘o-lantern into a yak-‘o-lantern!
