What is 'Serverless'?

What is "Serverless" and what do we use it for?

Coming solely from a Net Eng background, this stuff is still a bit grey to me. I like the way this is explained by relating real world items we all already understand. The part that is difficult for me to understand is thinking about an example such as Sharepoint. Can the entire sharepoint application be offloaded into a serverless function? Maybe I am thinking about this wrong, but what would make this easier is a side by side comparison of a bare metal deployment vs a container deployment of that same application. Has anyone seen an example such as this or can anyone explain why this thought process might not be realistic?

Nice explanation, but a bad example with the azure function. SharePoint assembly? Really? Just use the web api, problem solved.
