You didn't mention this but the reason for this is because the MIG-29 was designed to be deployed from short, improvised
sand/dirt airfields. the intake closes to prevent dust from entering :)

I just wish they'd simulate the exhaust valve in the P-47. It closes gradually with altitude, making the supercharger generate more power as it goes higher
