This time we @wildanimalplanet discuss about animals 4 species of Hyenas.
============================================================================
Hyenas, or hyaenas with only four extant species (each in its own genus), it is the fifth-smallest family in the Carnivora and one of the smallest in the class Mammalia. Despite their low diversity, hyenas are unique and vital components of most African ecosystems.

Hyenas, which are part of the suborder Pheriformia, are phylogenetically close to cats and viverids, but have some behavioral and morphological similarities to canids due to convergent evolution. Neither hyenas nor canids live in trees and are elusive hunters, capturing prey with their teeth rather than their claws. Both can be eaten immediately and stored. And stiffened paws with large, blunt, non-retractable claws are good for running and making sharp turns.

Hyenas are not members of the dog or cat families. Instead, they are so unique that they have a family all their own, Hyaenidae. There are four members of the Hyaenidae family: the striped hyena, the “giggly” spotted hyena, the brown hyena, and the aardwolf (it's a hyena, not a wolf).

About 50 million years ago, when the Order Carnivora branched into dog & cat lineages, hyenas arose from the cat group which also belong to Suborder Feliformia or cat-like carnivorans such as wild cats, domestic cats, meerkats, mongooses, civets & related taxa.
Hyenas are NOT members of the dog & cat families, instead they're uniquely a Hyaenidae Family on their own, neither canines nor felines.
Although hyenas resemble dog-like features, they're biologically more closely related to cats.
Family Hyaenidae diverged about 30 million years ago.
Taxonomic classification of dog-like carnivores or predatory mammals belong to Suborder Caniformia which includes otters, weasels, badgers, skunks, minks, stoats, raccoons, dogs, foxes, wolves, wolverines, coyotes, jackals, bears, seals

Among the FOUR species of Hyenas, ONLY the Spotted Hyenas hunt & scavenge as a social clan/pack OR each hyena can be a solitary forager whereas other species do not have such complex social structures, cognitive & interactive coordination.
Brown Hyenas & Aardwolves are distinctively solitary scavengers,
which only hunt occasionally & they don't congregate in social packs & complex structures of coordination.

There are basically four different extant species of Hyenas.
Spotted, Striped, Brown & Aardwolf.
Hyenas are closely related to cats, as according to genetic analysis, even though their physical characteristic features resemble dogs appearance.
Hyenas look like dogs because their behaviour & physical attributes were effective adaptions to the environment & filled a similar
ecological niche, which is called concurrent evolution.
That's why Hyenas behaviour are resemblance to African Wild Dogs
despite both species don't evolve from same ancestors.
Infact, Hyenas biological closest relatives are actually mongooses & civets.

Spotted Hyena : Largest & most common species also known as the laughing hyena; inhabit mainly across Southern African continent such as Angola, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya & parts of Ethiopia & Somalia;
Spotted hyena has one of the most powerful jaws of bone crushing bite force about 1, 100psi of brutality, on top of all other carnivorous mammals grip force of the African Savannahs kingdom; its stomach is capable of digesting hard bones; an opportunistic scavenger as it steals prey carcasses from other predators & hunters like Wildcats & Nile Crocs; but it also hunts in packs which consist mainly of maternal led clans, complex hierarchical social system of up to 80 or 90 individual members in a clan mostly controlled by dominant females; a clan of spotted hyenas can often be in ferocious & turbulent confrontation/social conflicts with a pride of lions & lionesses due to predatory instincts or scavenging prey carcasses etc.

Striped Hyena : Only species that has wide spread range of habitats in & outside Africa such as Middle East, India & Central Asia; the least studied species due to its nocturnal & cryptic behaviour/habits; live near the edge of human settlement in North Africa & Asia, thus in conflicts with human activities of densely populated rural areas & farmlands as it foraged & scavenged large carcasses of mammals near farms, also gorged into fruit orchards & vegetation.

Brown Hyena : Only hairy or furry species also known as Strandwolf is slightly smaller than the spotted one; this is the rarest species of all, where its habitat range mainly found only in Southern Africa, overlaps with the spotted species, where it exists at low population densities; exclusively nocturnal & solitary forager, always scavenge for carcasses alone & will chase off leopards, cheetahs, servals, wild dogs & jackals from kills, but the spotted hyena will chase it away from the scavenged carcass.

Aardwolf : Is NOT related to a wolf as its name suggested & it resembles the least "hyena like" species of the family but more like a dainty fox; its diet is quite unusual because it preys upon insects, particularly & almost exclusively feeds on harvester termites, this nocturnal insectivore can eat up to 300, 000 termites per night based on a documentary; can be found in Eastern & Southern regions of Africa.

Spotted hyenas are the most unique out of all the species of hyenas despite having the largest population. They make laughing sounds, and the females are larger than males.

What do people hate hyenas for? Especially aardwolves, they're very cute.
