Movement III: Solutions
Part I: listen to the air around you | by Jack Campbell

"listen to the air around you" is a celebration of nature around us, and how things recirculate. Layers of sounds are ‘recycled’ and ‘filtered’ into new things by a Max/MSP computer program.

The source sounds, loosely related to materials and the climate, include a fire engine bell, a train, cans being rattled, and glass being smashed. They are repeated to form a textured tapestry, gradually ‘filtered’ through three layers of processing as the performers alter speed, pitch and volume.
This is not a didactic piece shoving 'let's recycle' down people's throats. I want to lure people into a strange world and make them think for themselves...

Composer Jack Campbell is preoccupied with the way music can release personal trauma and improve mental health. He won the keyboard category of BBC Young Musician in 2016 and performs regularly as a pianist.
