"If you're depressed you shouldn't be in C major."

Quote of the day.

I think it makes sense to be in a major chord. The song is about being depressed and trying to fake being happy

The upbeat vibe is the point of the song. It's about putting on a happy face and performing when you feel the opposite.

How dare you cut out the "Why are you depressed? Go buy another jet or something" lmao

But Rick, that's exactly the point of this song. She may be depressed, but she does what's expected of her: Puts on a fake smile, acts like she's happy, and pumps out her bubblegum hits. It HAS to be in a major key! "The show must go on."

I mean, sometimes playing depressing lyrics on an upbeat track elicits an interesting feeling.

So crazy that people could use irony in art. What a concept!

I’m not a swifty, the way people react to Taylor is how I reacted to tool, just in complete AWE. But… I like when sad lyrics are put to an up beat. It’s interesting. Like father John misty, or postal service..

Beige sells better than purple. Sad but true.

The song being upbeat is precisely to point out the contrast of her performing fine while being broken hearted. This song is genius.

The major "happy" sound fits with the lyrics. Thought it was one of the best productions on the album tbh.

I don't care if you're a billionaire or not, but she is human and she has feelings. Money cannot buy happiness.

I'm surprised you missed the irony of a pop dance song in C talking about how absolutely broken she is after the end of a 7 year relationship. She did this in C and up-beat on purpose to juxtapose her sadness.

The idea of C major is that she is depressed but she needs to be cheerful - so she feels one thing, but she shows another - and it turns into some kind of a parody. For me this song is a parody of what show-business actually is: "Fake it til you make it", as she sings... Like a clown. This is my interpretation of the song, and I like it because see it as a parody. A parody of... the Abba-culture, perhaps!

Actually, the “being depressed but singing in C major” is exactly the point of the song. She was broken-hearted but still had to act like she was happy on tour for the sake of “the show must go on.” This is why context is important when it comes to Taylor.

Conveying the "I act like it's my birthday" is the whole point of C major

I love when sad songs are in major, and when happy songs are in minor! It's part of the message. She's saying she's faking it. C'monnn. It's perfect.

Dammit Beato! I've enjoyed your videos for some time but this is peak boomer territory. Telling a songwriter if they're depressed they should be in a minor chord. These are not serious comments and are beneath you.

But she's DEPRESSED and ACTING like it's her BIRTHDAY.
She STAYS in a SAFE HAPPY place.
That's how she copes WITH A BROKEN HEART
