Beyond the Stage: The Making of Santana & Buddy Miles Live! 1972 - Documentary

An underrated album that holds many secrets you wouldn't believe. Buddy Miles joined a special lineup of the Santana Band for a serious jam on January 1st, 1972. This concert remains an obscure title within Carlos' discography, technically his first solo record at the time, it's an electrifying mix of latin descargas, tight funk grooves and striking lead guitar work. In between Santana 3 and Caravanserai, this is a forgotten but vital document of a shape shifting band just before entering the doors of jazz rock and fusion. #carlossantana #santana #caravanserai #abraxas #documentary #classicrock #guitar

Great history! I was at the Sunshine Festival on January 1, 1972 (a Saturday). I and the friend I went with were 12 years old. Her mother had dropped us off at around 9:00 AM and was to return later in the afternoon. I remember people telling us to hurry and go up to the stage at the far end of the crater because Carlos Santana would be playing soon. (There was no mention of Buddy Miles.) That was around 1:00 PM. My friend and I made it to the front of the crowd and watched the local band that was playing. And then there was a pause. I remember "Yesterday" being played over the PA. Apparently, Carlos was late. We continued to wait. I was standing next to a guy with a million cameras strapped around his chest - I thought he was a photographer for a local newspaper but he probably was the photographer who took the shots that were included in the album. Finally, my friend and I had to leave because her mother was coming. I remember hearing the band start to play right as we were leaving the crater, walking through the tunnel that connects it to the main road (shown in one of the images you included in the video). It may have been around 5:00 PM. I was really sad to have missed that concert but I remember the day clearly. Keep up the great work!

JCM- I was in a band in the late 90's. We had a gig at the Berkeley Square in Berkeley with a local reggae group. We walked in while they were playing and I was immediately impressed at how great their percussionist was, with an assortment of drums and percussion. Well, it turned out be- none other then the great Mingo Lewis! I was floored. Backstage he was the life of the party, pacing around and joking.
Well I was in for a surprise. We played with them again at a Reggae Festival in the Sierra foothills. I played bass with this group though I am primarily a melodic style guitarist 🎸.
I went into a solo at one point, and who do I see and hear appear right next to me but Mingo! Apparently he dug my playing and couldn't resist joining in. It remains a highlight of my musical life. Another gig in Cotati CA saw Mingo, unannounced repeating his surprise jam session. I've never had a greater conformation of my guitar playing then this.
Beautiful. Thanks Mingo for the musical brotherhood.
Years later I went to Return to Forever in S.F. and Mingo was there looking for a ticket!
Inside he disappeared later in their set and- appeared on stage with them! As you mentioned on the Caravanseri video Mingo had some wonderful years recording and performing with Al Di Meola, and even briefly with RTF. So he knew them and I don't know if it was planned or not, it seemed spontaneous, but they didn't miss a beat and enjoyed themselves.
I thought you would enjoy this bit of music history my fellow devotee (!)

Peace ✌️ ☮️ 🕊 love ❤️ 💖 and 🌎 music 🎶 🎵 🕉 🌟 🌈 🌩 ⚡️ Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and so many others that have enriched our lives beyond measure.

Youtube has the show in Frankfurt that was a day or two after the June 30 1980 show. Carlos attended the Zep show and Page got up on-stage to jam w/Santana.

I've had this album since around 1978, listened to it hundreds of was deeply into Band of Gypsys at the time, and one of the 1st things I noticed is, in Free Form Funkafied at around 15.00, Carlos plays a guitar break that is his rendition of the break Jimi plays in Message of Love at around pretty much

They do john coltrane a love supreme. Got it for 2 bucks in the basement of a record store in Cleveland in the 80s. Great episode as always!!!

Despite that it was re-recorded in the studio with "canned" audience applause, it's still a fantastic listen, especially on vinyl w really good speakers cracked. Coke Escovedo is the father to Sheila Escovedo aka Sheila E . Buddy Miles had a fairly decent solo career throughout the '70's however, Them Changes was his only big hit...his band was poppin' Live in person btw.

At the time this recording was released, we had none information, so we listened to it ! As it is…
I was a huge fan of this recording… since 1972… I have both Vinyl and Cd… (I admit Side 2, always has been a true favorite mesmerizing… close to Caravanserai! …
Very well done and Emotional!

back in the late 80's early 90's you could see Buddy in Chicago clubs on a weekly basis. He had weekend gigs at Kingston Mines and BLUES on Halsted. Fascinating times.

SO GOOD! Thanks for doing this, as well as the equally excellent 'Making of Santana III'. Those were the first ever albums I owned, I received 'III' on cassette as a birthday present not so many years after its release...in 1974 or so. Also 'Santana/Miles' a bit later and on vinyl. This was thanks to a cousin of mine who was a few years older than me and was responsible for getting me into the guitar and rock music.

I always was fascinated by the Live album because it somehow never is discussed or listed in any Santana discussion. And even as a little boy, I heard something weird in the applause and it became clear later that is was looped and dubbed. Anyway, I agree that it's a killer album that should be better known. I will search it out on vinyl again. I think it was re-released on the audiophile 'Speakers Corner' label.

I found this cd without a cover someplace years ago, don’t remember where? I had never even heard of it, so was really excited to listen to it, being a fan of both of them already. I didn’t realize Schon was on it also having no liner notes, but I can hear it now. I really enjoy the album. A couple interesting personal notes, I live in a town in the San Francisco Bay Area, and saw Miles playing a theater downtown maybe 5 years before he passed away, it was an amazing show, he played drums, guitar and sang his heart out! ❤️ I’m a guitarist also, and I started talking to his guitarist between sets and after the show he invited me backstage where I briefly met Buddy while he was eating some ribs, he was very nice 😊 Another fun fact, I co host a blues jam in the same town currently and Mingo Lewis Jr. comes occasionally and jams on drums with us 🥁

Jose, with your almost encyclopedic knowledge (and an excellent mentor in your Uncle) there is one name that I may have missed, but have not heard you mention, Airto Moreira. I hear him in almost every one of Santana's songs. He seems to be stuck in my mind when I listen to Santana, but I hear so much of him in Santana's music. Just thought I would mention him to see if you had a similar felling on the matter. I am loving the direction that your going in! Everything you talk about I have some interest in and it never gets old and boring! I think I've heard all the Zeppelin stories a hundred times over the years, but your angle on things is giving it a fresh perspective that piques my interest with every new video! Airto was another guy that my Dad loved, he actually got me into him, so that's why I mention him! Keep em comin Jose!
