Why was the 6.8 Morocco quake deadly? - 3D SIMULATION

The magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Morocco
on September 8th is the largest to hit this area
in more than 100 years.

Old brick buildings can't survive
strong ground shaking that is larger than
about VI-VII on the Mercalli intensity scale. That would be the equivalent of
a maximum ground acceleration between
0.1 and 0.35 G... ...more than what you would feel in
a moving bus that keeps
accelerating and stopping
3 times each second!

I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. I do also hope that my videos will inspire a younger generation of architects, engineers and scientists.

My dad had a close call. Before the earthquake. My dad had to went to the sea until it happend. My dad was away from Morocco and the earthquake was happening. Luckily it was a close call for my dad and he didn't got injured, died, or affected

I live in Casablanca, and we felt the Earthquake, it was 4.8 magnitude in Casablanca, the buildings were shaking, the doors, the windows, I've never experienced that in my life, but the day after, I visited the center of the city where there are a lot of old buildings, the only things I noticed is that old buildings got some cracks on the wall, I didn't seen before.

I hope this becomes the norm. Explaining earthquakes soon after they happen. 👍 Hopefully buildings are being built better all the time whether or not they are in high risk areas.
