Back then they produced different versions of the same song. The single was usually shorter than the extended or album versions. If you thought the, over 5 minute version was too long (and that’s your major criticism), YOU picked the wrong version, because the single is just a little over 3 minutes

Back then it was about showcasing not only the singer but the instruments. They had a radio version then the extended version. Perhaps you picked the extended.
