A note on lightfastness:

Both Prismacolor and Polychromos colored pencils contain lightfast pigments to different degrees. Each color has a different lightfastness rating based on the pigment used in the pencil. Of the 150 colors in the line, Prismacolor contains 85 lightfast colors and 65 fugitive (non-lightfast) colors. In other words, 43% of Prismacolor pencils are not lightfast. My opinion is that this is a significant proportion of fugitive colors for an artist grade product line.

The Polychromos line contains 120 colors, of which only 2 are rated as fugitive. This is a much higher proportion (98%) of lightfast colors than Prismacolor.

My opinion is that my finished drawings or paintings are only as lightfast as the least lightfast pigment used. Of the 36 pencils in the Prismacolor set that I featured, 12 are rated as being fugitive (lightfast rating of IV or V) and 24 are lightfast (rated III or greater). That means I cannot use 12 of the pencils in my artwork if I intend on framing or displaying it—unless I take extra measures to protect the artwork against UV light. My opinion is that this is a significant drawback, especially given that many of the affected colors (ultramarine blue, blue violet, poppy red, orange, etc.) are what I consider to be essential colors. This is just my opinion. The Polychromos set that I also featured contains 36 colors, like Prismacolor. None of the colors are rated as being fugitive (all are lightfast). I feel this is a noteworthy difference between the two lines.

To be clear, I think that Prismacolor and Polychromos are both wonderful products. They would not be in this video if I felt otherwise. I did not explicitly state the lightfast ratings of each of the 270 pencils individually because, frankly, that is beyond the scope of this video.

If you do intend on using Prismacolor—or any other pencil—for artwork that will be displayed, you may wish to avoid fugitive colors or protect those colors from UV exposure. A UV protective glazing (glass) or UV protective spray fixative may help prevent fading of fugitive colors. Since it is basically impossible to predict how each of the many different products on the market will interact with each other, it is important to always test your materials yourself, for your specific application, before investing time and money in a project.

You can find the complete lightfast ratings for each of the 150 different Prismacolor pencils here:

And, likewise, the complete Polychromos ratings can be found under “Item Specs” in the product description here:

For independent lightfast ratings and further information, you can also consult the Colored Pencil Society of America:

I hope this clarifies the issue of lightfastness and fugitive colors touched on in this video. Have a wonderful day :)

Taste in art supplies is very personal. I encourage any family member of an artist to ask the artisr what they want or give cash or a gift certificate.

You did an excellent job on this, Natasha. All great ideas for artists, and you explained each one really well. I wasn't aware of the light fast colored pencils, they seem really cool. I agree so much about quality over quantity when it comes to brushes too. Big like!

I like to draw then paint, so whatever paper I buy, it has to have enough weight to paint on. On a budget, I like to buy Canson.
I love washi tape. For me, I can't have enough washi tape or stencils.
On the gouache, I use watercolors, so I look at gouache as producing a watercolor effect, just more opaque. Also with drying time, gouache is between watercolors and acrylic paint.

I've found the exact opposite about sharpeners. All hand cranks were bad until one day I got my $16 electric sharpener from Amazon and it's been perfect ever since! It works spectacularly!
I agree about the Strathmore 500 series mixed media but I have been to precious with mine even though I got it on sale. Its my highest quality paper really and well The last time I made art in it was 2018... I need to actually USE it... The picks here aside from the sharpener (I had that exact one and I despised it) I can agree with as great!
Fun video thanks.

Oh my goodness, that Strathmore journal is going right under my tree. I had no idea a 90# could support gouache. I tried a cellulose paper with acrylics a couple days ago and it came out beautiful. Was looking for an affordable journal ... wah lah! Love your recommends, and also love the art you shared! You're very good, even with portraiture!!! 🥰Art hug, Natasha! Nice to see another share from you 🥰

Thank you so much, I’ve been looking art related gift ideas for my sister and this was very helpful. Even tho I’m some kind of ”artist”, I didn’t know that papers could handle acrylics. But well, I’m not familiar with painting mediums 😅

Most of prism colored pencils are also lightfast I believe 85 are so saying they aren't isn't true I get why you'd think that since some are not they have 150 colors total and 65 are a low lightfast rating which all lighfast ratings are based on the pigment not of its wax based or oil that is just a binder.

I’m new to your channel so this may be addressed elsewhere (I’ll look!), when you’re using your Holbein acryl, how do you keep them moist enough to continue using. I love the look of them but find they dry more quickly than my liquitex or golden.
