Thanks Afrikaans! I've been suffering from Nederlands for mijn hele leven but you cured me!

5:55 about z we still have z as a letter and a sound but it's rarely used, usually just for afrikaans versions of names from other languages and sound somewhere between s and c sound wise, most commonly it's used for names like zebra and zoe and zombie - from personal experience, although in more than 1 occasion it sounds a lot like how the word sounded in the original language - see zombie, but this is due to how relatively new the word is and how recently it was added to the Afrikaans vocabulary.
As for our foundation of our Afrikaans language it's heavily borrowing from German and some little bit of French (English was largely pushed away due to the Boer wars and the British takeover of Boer republics and banning Afrikaans as a language. We also have some influences from malay (from slaves - also muslim so some Arabic crossover like the first Afrikaans bible was written in Arabic but reads more like 1600's Dutch) and khoisan languages with some very minor Xhosa and Zulu thrown in as well by the tail end of the 1800's, by 1925 Afrikaans had grown into it's own unique language but was still using the Dutch language and people where starting to notice the writing and spoken versions had a some differences and for an Afrikaans speker reading Dutch was also starting to become a school issue so in 1925 they set out to make rules for the language and made a written form that fitted the spoken version of the language.

'ij' was actually not "changed" to 'y' it simply "split off" from dutch before dutch changed its 'y' to 'ij'

Kan niet geloven dat ze 't Nederlands (beste taal ter wereld) hebben verbeterd, goed zo!

holy shit I don't know why YouTube decided to recommend this video to me right now, but I'm glad it did

Hey man, a friend of mine sent this on our discord server earlier today- and this was great! I'm Afrikaans myself, so its really cool seeing non-local content on anything Afrikaans-related. Regardless of that- your content is very fun to watch, it's well paced, well edited, and overall enjoyable. Keep up the good stuff! (+1 subscriber from me, hehe)

I love the style of these videos, the limited animation and collage thing is so cool. I loved the parallax scrolling and the door opening, and you did all that just by sliding images around. And I love how you put yourself into the places, partially obscuring yourself behind furniture or grass goes a long way to selling it. It's very inspiring seeing such cool visuals created with such simple techniques. It makes me want to make my own videos. Thank you for posting these!

There's also huge influence of or perhaps even the basis of Afrikaans being Zeelandic and South Hollandic dialects of Dutch with a smattering of Brabants which share far more vocab and sound changes with Afrikaans than Standard Dutch, because most northern areas of what is now the Netherlands were historically Frisian or Saxon from a historically linguistic perspective they have a substrata of Frisian or Saxon not found as prominently in the South.

That alien ship setting on the planet (upside down world)... That is a person from SA setting foot on Netherlands soil with the purpose of settling here. No, holiday just doesn't justify it.

Jy praat Afrikaans soos 'n Rooinek.

2:25 i would support this if they got rid of all the standard average european grammar & replaced all the french loanwords with either native words or from actually cool languages like greek or hebrew

Just one note suffix -en being isn't pronounced like schwa always. In the northeast people pronounce it like en and in formal speech it is said sometimes as well

Ek is bly jy dink Afrikaans is so 'n wonderlike taal. Dit is aansienlik makliker as Hollands.
(It is *not* a cat.)
