The Battle of Nicopolis took place on 25 September 1396 and resulted in the defeat of an allied army of Hungarian, French, Burgundian, German and assorted troops (assisted by the Venetian navy) at the hands of an Ottoman force under the lead of Sultan Yildirim Bayezid Khan (aka: 'The Thunderbolt'), raising of the siege of the Danubian fortress of Nicopolis and leading to the end of the Second Bulgarian Empire. It is often referred to as the Crusade of Nicopolis and was the last large-scale crusade of the Middle Ages.

Crusaders lost this battle because of the hasty advance of the young french knights who ignored the advice of their seniors as well as of the king Sigismund for waiting for the Hungarian infantry to reach for their assistance. They wanted all the glory for themselves and after crushing the Ottoman vanguard which was always the least equipped of their forces kept on advancing until they met the dreaded sipahis and janissaries on top of the hill, who crushed them completely. Without the cavalry support the rest of the crusader army was soon cut to pieces.

I'm Serbian. And I have a message for all of you who are trashtalking Serbia. I wish that Serbia had joined Ottomans long before Battle of Kosovo in 1389 when our adult population was decimated. At least my people would have lived through. Serbia didn't betray Europe. Europe betrayed Serbia. The only help besides individual that Serbia received in Battle of Kosovo was from King Tvrtko of Bosnia. Not a single European ruler helped us defend the borders of Europe, even though a couple of years before we asked for help from the Pope. Even after the fall of Serbia in 1459, a lot of Serbs migrated to the Austrian side of the borders to hold off the Turks. I'm also glad that my country didn't fight alongside of Crusaders, as many of them were beasts who used to massacre and rape everything on their path. Even Turks were gentlemen compared to them.

Yeah, and Serbian attack was crucial for Ottoman victory. In one moment Hungarian attack was so strong that Bayezid even wanted to escape from battlefield, but Serbian knez Stefan Lazarević arrived in battle and overthrew king Sigismund from horse. Soldiers than thought king Sigismund was dead and escaped from battle. That was, , the great Ottoman victory''.

@OttomanTotalWar As far as I know, this not the last crusades against Ottomans. there were series of big crusades campaign against ottomans. They were Nicopolis in 1396, Varna in 1444 and Second Kosovo in 1448. Ottomans annihilated all crusades armies in these battles that After these battles crusaders took the position of defense rather than offence, thus they couldn't find any force to help Byzantians in 1453. Animation is really attractive, thank you for your effor

@ZmajSnoshaj
I don't know what you are talking about. Serbia was an Ottoman vassal and fought in this battle on the Ottoman side.

Well, Shildberger says Serbian prince dropped king's flag and king. King was saved by Hermann of Celje and Miklos Gara and than taken to boats. Yes, he was captured in the first part of battle, but his his story looks true - Sigismund crashed first jannisaries and azaps (infantry), and than attacked sipahs, armored cavalry. Bayezid was scared. It is logical, infantry with strong bows was the mightiest part of Turkish army, not sipahs. Sipahs did not have a chance against hard Hungarian cavalry..

So? I wrote you just said - Serbian attack was the last involved, but it was crucial. Hungarian king dropped and army was scared, they thuoght king was dead or captured. This information I got from Johannes Schiltberger, young Bavarian soldier who was in this battle and wrote the book named Reisebuch about his adventures. By the way, the same situation was happened at battle of Varna 1444. Hungarian army crashed Turks, but young king tried to kill sultan Murad II alone, and jannisaries killed..

Very nice effort to produce an animated battle of Nicopoli it would have better impact if sieged Turks in the fortress of Ncopoli showed.The great Bayezid Yeldrim annexed Balkans, serbia and reached almost to present day Austria even he was planning to annex Hungary Empire of Sigismund to Ottoman.Unfortunately Timoor Lang had destroyed Muslim Ottoman Sultanate in the battle of Ankara although he did well in entral Asian States.

i know that guy, hammer wrote his books that part according to him but he was captured at the first part of the battle (he was a child servant of a french noble actually) i m not sure about his objectivity. hungarian king was never dropped actually he was taken to boats on danube by teutonic knights. the thing about varna is also a bit different. king vladislas was not the commander of the army, it was jan hunyad. and crusader defeat was about his cowardness.

Of course, king had 500 Polish knights in attack, but that was not enought against thousands of janissaries.

You should study Jean Froissart's Chronicles and learn!

... hand-to-hand. By the way, after battle Serbian prince got a big prize, Bayezid gave him countries of Vuk Branković, his rival in the fight for Serbian throne.
Of course, Hunyadi was commander, king was behind army on the safe place because he was only 20 years old and with no experience. But in one moment he saw sultan and tried to kill him. That was fatal mistake.

Remember battle at Didimotika in 1352, when Bulgarian army escaped and leave 4000 Serbian knights alone against more than 10000 Turks?

those things were normal at battles just like serbians was doing good at the beginning at kosova but was defeated after bayazid's fericous attack

Serbia was defeated at 1371 and 1389. Europe was defeated 1396. The Islamic state of Osman kicked Europes ass since 1354-1683. I think Islam will rise again and then we kicked the final battle 😉
