Dude I worked at a used car lot and had to do a timing belt for one of these things and I asked for the proper tools and they made me do it without it, I was a hair off and it came back for me to inspect it. I took the top timing cover off and said the same thing. They gave it back to the customer, they took it to the dealership, came back out of time. It did run good though for no tools being the cam gears don't have set teeth. Got me the tool set and could have avoided that whole interval. But I don't get paid to think. I quit lol.

What’s the point if the marks are not aligned properly to begin with?

You need to align the sprockets to those marks on them then put the keepers with the clips on both, if you need some help let me know, I'll be here...😅😂😅😂

You know what I did when I just started out my career? I cut out 2 pieces of 10cm x 5cm from my old flip flops and jammed it in between😂. Now I still use it after 8 years.

This tool serves some purposes first and most important is so your cams don't turn free as you remove the timing belt because it will damage your valves if it happens .

Unfortunately, when you come into my shop to get that timing fixed. It's going to seem like I charged you double. But that's only because, the guy who did it the first time, didn't do it right.

Yeah bro, that cam gear looking like a bright CEL once you fire it up, that wont go away till you tear it all back apart and align it properly.
