The rest of the interaction with that girl was cut off. What the teacher did was to realize she didn't know anything. The girl was right, not the teacher! And the teacher realized it. SHE had to give them respect to win theirs! She began to get to know the kids, their background, what was going on at home, what they had endured already in their young lives. That is why it was such a good movie. It is a true story... Freedom Writers exists today trying to help bridge the gap between teaching curriculum mandates and teaching compassion, understanding, knowledge, and action that "makes a goddamn bit of difference" to their lives! An awesome teacher who was willing to go beyond the confines of a broken education system. I have the movie and have shared it with many teachers and political figures to their rave reviews so I have hope that sometime in the future, they WILL make the difference and the kids will prosper for it.
