My band attempted to play this song 4 years ago. I'm happy to report that we're feeling much better and the bandages should be coming off soon.

Collins is criminally underrated for his drumming.

Steve Hackett is a genius. He definitely does not get the recognition he deserves. Thanks Rick!

Tony Banks is a genius player and composer. His chord progressions are unique, full of a mixture of melancholy and hope feelings, but always with beauty... very much beauty!

Just listen to Phil Collins drumming on this album. He was at the top of his game and one of the best and most underrated drummers of our time.

I realized what massive music nerd I am when I found it totally thrilling to watch Rick count out 7/4 meter.

Phil gets my vote for most musical drummer. It’s not just the weird meters, it’s where he hits the drum. A good drummer makes the song breathe, but a fine drummer accentuates the melody with the hits. Face it, he’s probably the most musical drummer we’ve ever had. He spun these weird, horror movie bits into pure gold. And he was the major arranger for the band, but he didn’t care credit. My daddy was in love with him, and he was a jazzer.

For a lot of us Genesis fans, this album was quite a pleasant surprise.

"Holy mother of god you've got to go faster than that to get to the top" is probably my favorite Genesis line.

So, 45 years ago, in 1975, Genesis had just lost Peter Gabriel. They weren't quite sure where things were going to go from The Lamb. Let alone figure out who was going to sing now. They had lost their main lyricist, singer, and front-man (and flautist and tambourine player)

Knowing all that, makes Trick of the Tail all that much more stunning. This is a retooled band making this amazing music.

"Entangled" is one of the most incredibly beautiful songs ever written.

Damn. I’m a trained classical musician and feel proud I could understand this video/song. It’s so complex and is so different than what I play. Trick of the Tail is my fave Genesis album. Genesis humbles me. They’re flawless.

Thanks Rick for recognizing Phil Collins as the immensely talented drummer he is!

Genesis, Rush, Yes ... some incredible musicians and poets - the likes of which aren’t seen anymore.

Rick is giving away a wealth of musical knowledge for free. This is definitely worth paying for.

"All the right notes in the right spot." Pretty much sums up any Genesis song.

It's a school night, I was laying in bed listening to my favourite radio station before going to sleep. The Sydney station JJ. This came on 😯🤯😍 My 1st time hearing Genesis. I'll never forget it.... been a fan since then! 😁👍

On Phil Collins' drumming, when the "A trick of the tail" tour started, the band needed a second drummer on stage so Phil could do his lead vocal duties and they drafted in nobody other than fellow Prog legend Bill Bruford, who had just left Yes. Bruford is one of the most technical drummers out there but he says that the fit felt natural since Phil Collins' drumming is actually quite similar to his own.

But the fact that Bruford couldn't put his own spin on the drum parts began to weigh down on him and he left the band after the tour ended. So the band said "We need to have a studio guy, a drummer who plays what he is told he should play and doesn't want to put his own spin on things." enter former Weather Report/ Frank Zappa drummer Chester Thompson.

Phil and Chester had a mutual admiration for each other's drum style and played off of each other and learned from each other. As Chester later said "I learned the Ringo groove from Phil and he learned the Philadelphia soul swing from me."

Quite high praise indeed from Chester Thompson and Bill Bruford.

Love your "What Makes This Song Great" series.

I would love to see you do one on "Firth of Fifth". That song cries out for a deep analysis.

Anyway, thanks!!
