The USA is in 7.3 trillion dollars of debt to foreign investors.

This graphic shows which countries hold the most debt in the form of Treasury securities.

Japan is the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt with 1.1 trillion dollars in Treasury holdings.

Japan took the number 1 spot in 2019, after China shed over 250 billion dollars.

China offloading these bonds allows it to manage its exchange rate by buying its own currency, increasing its value.

The UK comes in at number three, with over 655 billion dollars.

A handful of small nations own a surprising amount of U.S. debt.

The Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Bahamas, and Luxembourg have a combined population of 1.2 million people, but own a huge 741 billion dollars in Treasuries.

One reason for this is that there are more hedge funds domiciled in the Cayman Islands per capita than any other nation worldwide.

It’s very important to point out that those numbers are not representative of these nations government us debt holdings. Its those countries as a whole including private investors domiciled there.

The best part is that all that debt is held in US dollars. Making these governments incentivized to keep the value of the USD high
