This road trip started off just like any other - until it came time to get in the i15. The i15 was closed almost the entire weekend due to a truck accident carrying a lithium battery. Even worse, the alternate route was backed up even worse!

We had to do an impromptu Tesla Camp Mode with both of our dogs because we were stuck in Barstow, California waiting for the i40 to be safe or the i15 to be open. Luckily, the i15 opened early in the morning.

This 6 hour road trip turned into a 14 hour road trip! We were thankful to have the Tesla Model Y with camp mode to be able to do this.

I watched the other video yesterday and thought, when you went past the burning truck on the other side of the road--you are so lucky you missed the road closure. Ooops! So happy you found a place to camp for the night. As an FYI, Walmart parking lots are a good place to overnight; no one will come harass you.

I live in LA and heard about this 48 hour road closure all last week. Glad you made it home. Many years ago I drove cross country via the 40 and I remember that stretch east of Barstow to Needles was insane. Super hot and no services for over 100 miles according to a sign. Bad place to get range anxiety.

BTW took my first road trip to Ensenada MX last week and no issues with the premium connectivity while in Mexico. Everything worked normally like while in the U.S. While waiting in a 75 minute border line my Model Y only lost 1% of battery 👍

We were part of that closure and I feel for you guys. We decided on taking our ICE, SUV and it was a good call. I wondered how we would have done in out a Tesla. What should have been a 4 hr trip turned into a 16 hr tour... worst ever! Glad ya'll made it hm.

Awesome trip documentary, weve had some trips, not work as planned, so explore the area we get rerouted to, and our big dog gets to mark new territory

We recently spent FIVE days basically camping in our Model 3 LR, and actually found it to be quite comfortable. With unlimited internet plans in the car and from both our phones, we had ZERO connectivity issues, plus we also brought a lithium power station as a backup…

We charged less than ten miles from our destination, parked the vehicle in one spot the whole time with Sentry mode active the entire time, and still made it back home after leaving the location with 56% charge, and arrived with 5% remaining… Our hotel reservation incurred a debacle that upset us so greatly, we refused to stay and decide to camp in the car…

Motel MODEL 3 | LR was definitely a FIVE star experience (⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Zero Dogs (pet odor not an issue)…

When you see roads close and your destination battery end trip is 11 percent. I would have just rented a room and stayed till reopened.

Thanks for sharing your road trip. Here’s a pro tip. I noticed you were driving at 80 mph. To conserve your battery, drive 70 or under.

I wondered how this I15 road closure affected Tesla travelers. Now I know! I plan to travel with an inflatable mattress, right now I’m just using a twin gell cell topper. Of course, there’s not a lot of room in a Model Y when traveling with more than two people. Even two is extremely tight back there, unless they are two compatible smaller sized people. Fortunately, I can sleep anywhere, so the front seat would be fine too. Good thing you didn’t try the Death Valley route!

Yikes! yeah tesla nav doesn't seem as good at catching road closures, but eventually it does... wondered once why kept suggesting odd route, turns out...closed..
You probably could have made it thru 395/Death Valley, Lone Pine west entrance and Beatty, NV on east wide should work, but... driving some unfamiliar steep winding road parts in middle of night, in death valley, ...bit scary/sketchy. Good call to just camp out and try again next day!! Glad you all made it ok!

Even though you were in a Tesla (I have a 2023 Model Y), I wouldn’t call that a trip gone bad.
You were in the same predicament that hundreds of other drivers were and you could have stopped in Prim to charge up before your last leg.
I look at that trip as an adventure.
We will be driving from San Diego to Galesburg, IL next year so I’m looking forward to a long-distance trip.
