The fear in everyone's eyes when the sirens went off lol. I felt that

I expected to hear a train whistle and the sound of the railroad crossing. Cause goodness knows you can't drive thru many small southern towns without getting caught by an extremely slow moving train.

The creak of the rockin' chairs on the porch... or the swing in the big tree in the yard.... or the screech of the blue jays when the cat walks through the yard....a dog barking in the distance.... the roosters crowing... the old mule baying across the river.... the skins of the rapids in the river at the foot of the hill.... the laughter of the children playing in the creek at the park.... so many wonderful sounds and smells from childhood and now. 🧡It's great to be a Southerner!!!🧡

The most Iconic Southern sound,
" Hey, Y'all!
Watch This!!"
These are also our Most Famous Last Words.
Unless it's said by a Southern Teenage Boy.
They add, "EVERYBODY, STAND BACK!"
...Fortunately, for everyone looking on....

I wanna tell y’all a story about a man hearing cicadas for the first time.

So, my husband was in Kentucky for a USW event, and at these events are many folks from all over the world. One of these fellas was a gentleman from Scotland.

So one night everyone went out to a longhorn steakhouse, and when they were done, they decided to go outside for a smoke.

While they were outside the Scottish fella starts hollerin, “Chuck! Chuck! What the hell is that sound man?!” (Please read that in a Scottish accent). So my husband says “what sound?” And the Scottish man replies “that sound! Is that a rattlesnake?” And my husband starts laughing and realizes he is asking about the cicadas.

Once he explained it to him, the Scottish fella felt more at ease as he was no longer facing an imminent snake attack.

My older sister had 4-year-old me convinced that even touching a cicada shell would kill me horribly.

My family lived about two or three blocks away from my high school's football stadium. That sound of a football game and crowd at a distance really takes me back. Thanks, IAST, for reminding me.

If you go outside during the Alabama Summer, the cicadas are always out. If you hear them you know it's going to be hot that day. It's almost like a Summer theme song.
