Sand Removal/Restoration Process Begins!

Contractors have arrived on Sunset Beach to begin the sand removal and restoration process. The following explains how that process works:

➡ Environmental Concerns & Permits
• Environmental standards guide the process, and the city is working closely with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Pinellas County, and the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure all actions meet regulatory guidelines. The beach has been cleaned of foreign debris to allow for sand replacement.
• Separate piles will be created for debris, unusable sand, and clean, usable sand.
• After cleaning, the usable sand will be spread on the beach according to the approved design template. Pre and post-surveys of sand replacement will be performed.

➡ Cleaning Process
• Sand on the bottom of piles that have touched roadways may not be used. Unusable sand will be disposed of, which will be a longer process.
• The sand recovery process includes the removal of any foreign debris, such as glass, metal, and other storm remnants, to ensure the sand is safe for beachgoers and wildlife.
• The sand on top and middle of piles will go through a screening and sifting process to make sure the sand meets environmental standards to be placed back onto the beach.
• This is why we ask residents and businesses not to place debris and trash on top of sand piles. This will just contaminate the sand more.

➡ Placing Sand Back on the Beach:
• After cleaning, the usable sand will be spread on the beach according to the design template similar to the dune restoration template.
• That template will need to be modified to make sure sand is spread evenly onto the beach.
• Volunteer crews are cleaning the beaches to get them ready for the sand placement.

This is the quickest process to get the sand out of the neighborhoods. Trying to remove all the sand from the area would take months and is not feasible. This is the quickest process. The strictest environmental standards will be in place to make sure the sand is safe for people and wildlife.
