Ok I always thought California had a highway patrol because it's so huge and needed a designated highway police force didn't realize it was this intense. Thanks for teaching me something as always

There was a California State Police they were absorbed by the CHP. The CHP only dealt with traffic and their badges said traffic officer. When California State Police was absorbed by CHP that’s when badges changed and they began to do criminal investigation.

CHP retired.

Good job on the video. You guys forgot to mention the ISU, (Investigative Services Units) including Auto Theft, Cargo Theft, and FEAR units.
I went through the CHP academy at 33 years old. It was more stressful than when I went through Marine boot camp at 18. The academy is no joke. Academics are tough and injuries can really take their toll on cadets. Once you generally do your time in the LA area or SF Bay Area, you can put in for other areas of the state, generally making substantially more income than rural county agencies you serve alongside with. Again, there are many opportunities for those seeking a career with the CHP. Be safe all, and thank you GD!

I had no idea the CHP had its own SWAT units until I worked as a temp employee at a state law enforcement where a CHP officer was attached.

The CA CHP and the CA CDCR (Corrections) have "Live In" Academies where you are basically there 24/7/365 for 4-6 months. Overall, this develops quite a bit of quality skills, training and standardization amongst the Officers. I've worked with CDCR and they are all very professional and tough Officers. I'd assume CHP is the same. Very dedicated and they see and deal with a LOT out here in "Crime-A-fornia". Cheers all.

Love to be a helicopter operations officer just because I love flying. Flying in and around LA airspace is the most complex form of civilian flying you can ever do however. Beside coming in conflict with dozens of flight corridors there are literally tens of thousands of very tall very slender power towers, telecom tower and other strange structures many hundreds of feet high in places you do not expect them to be. You really have your hands full flying a helicopter at night under difficult weather just looking for a car containing a suspect. Like a needle in the haystack at night

Not exactly in GD's niche (being government entities) but it might be interesting to see how much detail you could find on Black Knight Patrol since they, even though are a security company, seem to use a lot of specialized units like K-9, bomb detection, and some others

I live in Sacramento, and I’m in the backgrounds investigation process right now. It does take a very long time which I hate! Haha
Wish me luck!

Did you forget about CVE (Commercial Vehicle Enforcement)

You touched on it, but didn’t really mention it.

CHP, by law, is tasked with investigating all traffic collisions in unincorporated areas. Unlike in other states where the county Sheriff can enforce traffic, in California they do not normally do it. Sheriff’s can not run radar and enforce traffic as their primary duties.

Their primary duties are general law enforcement. CHP does not handle general law enforcement in the state unless it’s a mutual aid request from the county or city in that area.

This means that even if a collision happens 30 miles up a forest service trail, CHP has to respond to handle it.

If a County Sheriff deputy stops a vehicle in the county and the driver is DUI, CHP has to respond to take over the investigation. The Deputy does not get the arrest.

That’s just for outside of an incorporated area, some cities contract with the county for police services, and at that time the deputies are basically the same as a police officer and do everything a city officer would do. But in county areas, they don’t have traffic units, they don’t have accident units, they don’t run radar and lidar. CHP is required to do all that.

CHP is one of the few agencies in the state that do not take lateral entries. YOU MUST go through their academy, regardless if you already went through another academy in the state.
