Rey goes back to Ahch-To to hide, just as Luke did. However, Luke returns as a force ghost and realises his mistakes. He helps Rey to continue her journey. Basically, J.J. Abrams fixes everything wrong with Rian Johnson's Luke Skywalker.

When it's discovered that the evil Emperor Palpatine did not die at the hands of Darth Vader, the rebels must race against the clock to find out his whereabouts. I like to think that Luke's smile when he lifted his ship out of the water was a smile and nod to the audience. A throwback to Empire. That after 40 years, he finally lifted his ship out after failing to do so when he was training with Yoda because he didn't believe.

I still get tears seeing the bit at the end, where Luke is just calmly lifting the X-wing up and smiles to Rey. It shows that he's finally completely at peace and has redeemed himself completely after severing his connection to the force in 8. I hate TLJ still but this scene kinda makes his "arc" in the sequels better retroactively
