If you've ever done a 5 day Design Sprint, you might have noticed that the mapping exercise can be the most complicated spot and often the exercise that causes the most friction in the entire process.

We're here to help!

In this video Jonathan from AJ&Smart breaks down the mapping exercise into very simple steps and gives concrete advice that should help you out. Whether you're doing a design sprint with your team, or you're facilitating one for a client or group. HAVE NO FEAR! JON IS HERE!

This is the Map from the AJ&Smart Design Sprint 2.0 which happens on the Monday.

Design Sprint 2.0 Monday

The map is one of the exercises in the sprint that allows for SOME discussion. Which is a big reason that it can cause trouble... In this video Jon does an excellent job of showing you how we run the mapping exercise during our design sprints, and he even includes a couple of things that you won't find in the book ;) And remember, this isn't Design Thinking, the mapping process is a bit different here!

Happy Sprinting!!

We are AJ&Smart, a design agency based in Berlin. We are crazy about Design Sprints and innovation and we teach everything we know right here on Youtube. If you want to learn more about how to run the best Design Sprint EVER, subscribe and we'll help you every step of the way.

Great - I just finished reading “Monday” in the book yesterday. Perfect timing. See one. Do one. Teach one. Ordered “Click” to get ready for the Foundation Sprint. I hope to get my hat. 🎉

When we redesigning an experience/service, do you think we can use the discover, learn, use and goal heading? Because our customer already knows our service and using it.

@AJ&Smart What about "in house users" ? e.g. in context of building cms system for our employees. What name of steps would you suggest? Because they DISCOVER probably as a mail tool to work on, LEARNING during onboarding.... any idea what could fits better?

Hello!
Great video :) Learning so much.

One question 🙋🏼‍♀️ Would the goal in the mapping be the same as the long-term goal? @aj&smart

I have seen many journey maps where they mention touchpoints, delights and opportunities. Is that required?

Hi! Could you do an example where it's not about "external customer". Working on a sprint where we want to tackle messed up internal legacy processes where personas are different internal functions.

Hey guys! Amazing again. Looking at the overarching topics in the example of the blue coffee bottle like discover - learn - use - goal: e.g. for use, does it always must be the product (beans) that is used? Can it be the website or landing page or sth else to in this example?

Your video is a great example for identifying and getting users to buy or use a product. What happens if the user has already bought into the product. For example, with an enterprise product would you replace the top section? (Discovery, Learning, Using, Goal)

Awesome video!! I have a question, why this is not design thinking? what the difference from mapping experience, I thought they are different approaches to help us go from vision to specification but all are about design thinking. Thanks in advance for your answer!

Got a question - Do we Map for a specific business (such as "Laundry Service") or a tool/website (e.g. "Laundry Service website"). Both can have different set of actors.

Any ideas for adjusting this in case of starting with a problem and no solution yet in mind? Perhaps the map could be developed after research?
