Why UK job-seekers are struggling to find work

Competition among job-seekers hit its most intense level in three years in August, according to Adzuna, in a sign that the labour market continues to cool.

The job search engine reported that there were 2.09 jobseekers per vacancy last month after another fall in vacancies and a slight uptick in redundancies.

This was the highest number of job-seekers per vacancy since May 2021.

its an insanely painful job market, ive been working for roughly about 20 years and the last 18 months has been the toughest period for me being out of work this is the longest one been out for . I roughly apply for 50-100 jobs a week mostly perm but also contract roughs majority of the time I get no responses, Ive amended my cv 3 times and even peer reviewed my cv with friends and recruiters and even AI. I am fully qualified in my sector and have been out of work for that entire time, i know a few friends and former colleagues that are also out of work in different sectors too who are having a hard time . Currently looking to pivot into another industry Cyber Security although thats also a tough market to crack into. Its truly demoralising .

That's all wrong, nearly half of the 30 Million UK Labour Market is Not Actively in Work, and there is less than 1 Million available Jobs.

Worst of all, every job requires experience of the role so if you are just starting out you're done for. Back in the past, jobs would prioritise training you up whereas now they just take people who already have experience. Abysmal.

It's too difficult. Only those with 5+ years experience even have a chance. All I can recommend is move abroad.

I have as military background and a masters degree and so I have both life and academic experiences but christ, I'm close to leaving the UK. Never have I felt as though I've failed to the point of a mental health breakdown in all my life. Whilst I'm employed I've been actively applying for 16 months with copy and past rejection after rejection after rejection. Tailored covering letters and CVs, reaching out directly to companies, TAs and specialist recruiters. Each with their own bullshit opinions yet not one gatekeeper has opened the which by the way is their role.

For anyone saying it's just a numbers game or that for every no brings you closer to a yes is full of shit. It should not be this hard to find a role based on your skills an qualifications in 2024.

Long gone are the days where my parents quit a job on a Friday and started a new job on a Monday.

This may sound extreme but I don't want children because of this experience. What will the world be like in 30 years with the rise of AI for the next generation. Made worse as the population rises.

Increasing employer NI contributions, decreasing the business rates discount & introducing employer protection legislation will make this situation much worse & put off people wanting to hire, particularly entry level jobs. Who is going to take a chance on an unknown kid with no experience? Companies would be tempted to wait until AI/robotics kick in to get rid of humans altogether or avoid the taxman & pay in cash. This will hit the poorest particularly hard. This is just the start. What a disastrous budget.
