As am owner of this car I can tell you, they are solid, don't believe the crap on internet. Those horror stories are coming from non car guys who abuse their cars and expect them to last forever. Yes, few issues here and there, but once you take care of them it's bullet proof.

This car has lots of potential while in stock form it's not that good actually: suspension is the weakest spot and lots potential lies there.

Even though I agree with the fact that one should budget for eventual repairs when considering this car I don’t think it’s fair to say that rod bearings are a must on all vehicles. I have had a throttle actuator replaced under warranty and I consider that to be more of an issue than rod bearings as we know that gears inside actuators are made of plastic and will fail at some point. Going back to rod bearings, that’s a failure that’s been reported in around 1%-2% of cases, remember people are more likely to post and rage about an issue than if nothing ever went wrong. The single most important thing anyone considering this car is having comprehensive maintenance records as this would indicate the previous owner cared for it. Another very important factor in failure of rod bearings is not allowing the engine oil to come up to temp before romping on it, this is probably a huge contributing factor to poor oil circulation and lubrication of those components. As Glenn said, it’s a wonderful car to own and experience that engine, however don’t let the prospect of this deter you. Be smart, have a rainy day fund and let it warm up!

Love this car! Nice video Glen! I did exactly that with my 2009 with 86k miles on it. Rod bearings, motor mounts, belts and pulleys, and all filters and gaskets in motor and trans. Now the car runs 100%. I just got the cat out of storage Sunday for it’s first spring drive. What a fun car!!!

I really want this car... can’t afford to maintain it right now

Just change the rod bearings between 80-100k km, the motor oil (10E60) under 10k km you will have lots of fun👍🏻
Throttle actuators „can“ brake sooner or later😉
No one can tell when the will brake.

But yes, you can use it for daily use if you‘re not afraid of the terrible gas consumption😅

Life is too short, buy one if you can😎

Too late. I took the plunge last year. Lol. Found a 2012 Alpine White over black leather, ZCP, DCT, yada yada yada. Thought I had found my ultimate dream performance car. Pretty much drove it straight to my local BMW tech and had the rod bearings replaced and fixed a few other worn out items over the next month or so. Awesome car. If you can only have one car and want it to perform well, this is the one get in my opinion.

But then I came across a deal on a 2005 Launch Edition 997 with only 21000 miles on it. Now I have both and the E92 doesn't get near as much road time as the 997. A Macan S (also a black Launch Edition....) is the daily and the 997 is for fun. Now the M3 doesn't get as much road time as I thought it would when I bought it so I have to decide what to do with it.

I drive a 2012 dct M3. Previously i drove a manual 2008 M3. Dct is so much better than the manual. The DCT transforms this cars nature because of the S65 engines peaky powerband. The 6 speed manual also, isnt a very nice gearbox at all. If your buying an E92, trust me, the DCT is the gearbox to have, by a mile.

2008-2010.5 had copper/lead rod bearings. 2010.5 - 2013 had tin/aluminum rod bearings. The clearance didn’t change. All years are equally susceptible to spinning a bearing. One could argue the 2008-2010.5 bearings, because they’re not as hard as the 2010.5 - 2013 bearings, are a bit more forgiving if you spin one. It’s also arguably easier to track copper/lead in an oil analysis. This is why many of the aftermarket rod bearings are copper/lead like the early models. Some people will suggest the rod bearings don’t need to be changed, but most people have, that’s why there’s only a few percent of M3s with spun bearings. It’s worth the $2, 500 for peace of mind. It’s not a cheap car to operate, gambling rod bearings when the tradeoff is ending up paying $15, 000 for a used engine, installed, and with new rod bearings this time (assuming you learned an expensive lesson) just doesn’t make sense to me. But good advice, Glenn. I’ve owned about 20 cars and this is by far my favorite!

I’m prob keeping my e90 LCi M3 forever. They don’t make a car like this anymore. The dct isn’t bad I have it in my car. I don’t regret it. You can get the GTS tune and it’ll be even quicker. It’s way smoother and quicker and reliable than the SMG. Everyone wants the stripper model of course. RB and TB is the weak points.

Got my super clean E46 M3 earlier this year and was looking for a daily but I also dont want to keep buying cars that depreciate like sinking rocks. Really considering the E92 M3. Sure it probably has some more depreciation in it but I can pick one up for upper 20s, drive it for 3-4 years and still expect it to be close to the mid to low 20s vs picking up a 335/340 in the same price range that will be under 15k in 3 years. M Sport 340 might stay in the 20s but they are already floating between low 20s to mid 30s now. Cant beat an M car though. Think it would be nice thirsty addition.

Glen love your videos. I think your silhouette at the start of your videos should be what you print on your gear!

Very expensive To change the road bearings in US ! Between 2500/3000 ! Here, in France, with BMW screws OEM it is around 1600/2200$ ; concernant actuators, I agree. Thanks for vidéo. Normally after confinement, I buy a 25000 miles pack competition 2010 dct 😁 I'm impatient ! 🙄

A modern classic already. They are great cars. A friend lent me his e92 m3 manual for a while. Be prepared for some maintenance and atrocious fuel economy but they are worth it for the special motor.

Great stuff! My dream car is a manual E90 ZCP. I think it’s the rarest one outside the Lime Rock. Hopefully a potential upswing investment.
