2024 BMW 3-Series First Drive Review: The Benchmark Sport Sedan Stays On Top
The BMW 3-Series has been the quintessential sport sedan for decades, blending driving excellence, premium cabin appointments, and a range of powerful engines. For 2024, BMW keeps the 3-Series at the top of its game with minor updates after last year's major refresh. We spent some time with the latest iteration to see if BMW's iconic sedan remains the segment leader.
Right off the bat, the 2024 3-Series impresses with its chiseled good looks. The updated exterior styling is crisp and handsome without being too aggressive. The long hood, short overhangs, and wide stance give it the classic rear-wheel-drive sport sedan proportions that enthusiasts crave.
But it's once you get behind the wheel that the 3-Series really shines. BMW offers three excellent powertrain options, starting with the 330i's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 255 horsepower. It provides ample thrust along with impressive fuel efficiency. Those wanting more power can opt for the sublime M340i which packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 382 hp on tap thanks to a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Finally, the 330e plug-in hybrid offers 288 hp combined and 23 miles of electric range.
Regardless of powertrain, the 2024 3-Series delivers the engaging driving dynamics that made BMW famous. The steering is precise and well-weighted, the chassis is composed and willing to change directions, and the ride strikes an excellent balance between sharp handling and everyday compliance. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission choice, but it's a gem that fires off rapid, unobtrusive shifts.
Inside, the 3-Series cabin feels rich and upscale, though design-wise it skews more modern luxury than traditional BMW sport sedan. The waterfall-style center console houses a massive 14.9-inch touchscreen running the latest iDrive 8 software. It's a slick system that's simple to use and can also be controlled via voice, gestures, or the classic iDrive rotary knob. Ergonomics are excellent and material quality is beyond reproach.
As expected, the 3-Series offers a generous list of standard and available tech features like a digital gauge cluster, head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and more. However, more advanced driver aids like adaptive cruise and lane keep assist remain optional extras - BMW could be more generous on the safety front.
There's also a cavernous trunk measuring 17 cubic feet in the gas models, putting many larger sedans to shame. The 330e hybrid sacrifices some trunk space but still offers a usable 13 cubic feet.
The 2024 3-Series faces fiercer competition than ever from the Genesis G70, Acura TLX, and other sport sedans. But even after all these years, BMW's stalwart remains the dynamic benchmark that others must measure themselves against. With its exhilarating performance, premium trappings, and unflappable road manners, the 3-Series stays securely at the top of the sport sedan hierarchy.
