How to Grow Rhubarb – From Planting Crowns to Harvest

Rhubarb is a fantastic perennial vegetable which comes back every year. Commonly mistaken for a fruit due to its common occurrence in a popular desert, Rhubarb crumble.

Rhubarb crowns can be purchased in autumn and late winter. These crowns are established root nodules with a shooting bud. These can be planted in the ground or even in a pot. For best results plant crowns in a well prepared planting bed and mulched to suppress weeds.

Planting areas benefit from well rotted manure and a general purpose fertiliser. Rhubarb once planted will be in the ground for a long time so it is important to work the soil well.

Rhubarb can also be grown from seed however plants can take a long time to build up strength to be harvested in this way. Rhubarb is a perfect crop for permaculture projects or forest gardens.

Whether grown in the ground or container Rhubarb can tolerate cold temperatures and partial shade. This makes them a perfect crop for temperate climates such as the UK, Europe and America.

Paulo discusses how he grows Rhubarb and plants a crown and revisits it two years later. He shows you his plants progress and harvests some stems making Rhubarb crumble for the first time!

I used to live in an abandoned mining town in rural Alaska. The soil was mostly sand and rock from the glacier, but rhubarb was the main thing we could grow without any problem. There was a massive forgotten colony hiding in the shade behind one of our shacks

Grow it in half shade, it makes the plant grow larger as it stretches for the sun. it's never failed me.

Glad to see you're back!

May I offer an alternate hypothesis?

If the rhubarb was unwanted it might not have been harvested for a bit, leaving all the energy for the plant itself to use, resulting in very thick and big stalks.

Have you tried worm based fertilizer? I guess they put worms in with garbage and they take the juices and resell it. Maybe this would help replenish the soil again for rubarb so it doesn’t need to be moved?

Rhubarb is my least favourite plant but I have made relish to go with pork before. 🙂
