Russia has much less to do with the Rus than Ukraine. Kyiv was always the cultural center of the Rus. Russia was born out of the Mongol Empire and took the name Rus as it gives legitimacy. Lithuania which captured Ukraine did the same thing, but at least they held Kyiv.
