Euphemism is rhetorical. While this may have served a purpose in numbing pre-scientific societies to the dissonance and gore of killing and eating nonhuman animals (but not killing and eating the neighbors), it is certainly out of place in contemporary industrial society. Habits like these take a lot of effort to eliminate—and that's without the echo chamber of a consumerist subgroup (of hunters and the people profiting off of them).

I mean, the tradition didn't come from nowhere. For those who still cling to it, though, it's also not going anywhere. As a bonus, it sounds like pure sociopathy on paper.
