How to make an AXE from Recycled Plastic | HDPE Hatchet Handle

This one has been on our list for a while! In this video we show you have we gave an old hatchet a new lease of life by giving a brand new handle made from (you guessed it!) recycled plastic. One request we get a lot is how we make our moulds, so for this one we thought we'd show you how you can make a custom mould using materials you might already have lying around.

Let us know what you think of our HDPE axe! We are totally loving the black/white/orange combo and will definitely be using it in more projects. Thanks for watching!

I like that you guys used tools and methods that have some hope of actually recovering your waste. It disturbs me to see so many makers do a ton of sanding and create microplastic dust that ends up all over the place.

"We used what we had and we made it work" has got to be one of the best DIY lines ever. I consider it a point of pride to be able to use what I have on hand. This warms my soul. Thanks!

Looks great, and that melting technique to make the calico pattern is great.

Great video. Would love to see the large axe handle being made. Some of the most practical applications for home recycling.

I just stumbled across your video and watched. I enjoyed it. If you do make a full size axe handle, look into carbon fiber rods. Many guitar builders who do put truss rods in their guitar (and other musical instrument) necks will reinforce them with 2 carbon fiber rods down the length of the neck. For your axe handle, 1 or 2 rods down the length of the handle should add great reinforcement without adding a bunch of weight. If you do it for your small axe handles you can probably get away with just one rod in the handle. I enjoyed your video. Cheers.

Thanks for the GREAT video, with a full guide, from the very first start untill the very last step, naming all the tools and explaining why and how... I saw lots of DIY videos and i'm really impressed on how fast and easy you communicate everything, for a total newbie as me all the info i needed, and what i allready knew didn't bother at all, just on the way how you talk+show+move on fluently...

Lol, me commenting on the quality of your communication & editing skills... :'-D
I really enjoyed watching it, listened and looked carefully, no details where left out and neither did you over-explain or show...

First time viewer of your videos, and I'm triggered !!!

And yes, PS: great work on the Axe... Love axes and old weapons myself.... And the recycling and making people aware that you can even make better and more beautifull things....

GREAT job guys !!!! (the 570k views maybe yet gave you that hint... hahaha.)
Peace, lotta love & stay on track !
i've learned more in his video than just how to build an axe.
The world needs people like you guys !!!!

The lack of sanding is oh so satisfying. Thank you for being so ecologically conscious

great video great idea, it's nice to explore all the alternatives but the tradition of wood can't be beaten.
moreover, we should all return to using our tools as they once did, naturally and with a lot of care.

Hi, I make wooden didgeridoos and when teaching didgeridoo, plastic waste pipe works a treat.
Having just watched this video You can guess what sprung to mind.
Didges made from multi coloured recycled plastic would be awesome.
If you’re up for it, I’d happily give you some tips on dimensions, lengths to achieve certain keys etc and other things to consider to make a very playable and great sounding didge.
See what you think?
