This scene is a great example of the mistake people made with cgi early on. With the robe on, the creature actually doesn't look terrible today, the tracking is a little off, but it's photo real. It's uncanny, but that actually helps. When they show the full creature is where the illusion really breaks. Because they were flaunting their cgi, not realizing how bad it would look in the future. It's the shots where the filmmakers try to obscure the visual effects that actually look better.

Is anyone just appreciating that Gary Oldman is just having a ton of fun with this?

Rest in Peace William Hurt. A serious actor who embraced science fiction movies as an art form.

Say what you will about the scene itself but I love the "the pain, the pain" moment. It's a cool little nod and reference to the show and is fun.

Maybe its just me, but this spider form of Dr Smith oddly resembles Robot in the Netflix adaption of Lost in Space, with the split arms, split legs and semi humanoid body, plus the color of the plating.

There were actually supposed to be two sequels after this movie. If that happened, I wonder what the Robinsons, Robot, and Don West would have done about Dr. Smith with his spider bite to prevent him from turning into this.

I just can’t believe this movie bombed at the box office, I remember all the hype. Loved watching some of the re-runs on BBC 2 back in the day. I think iTV also aired some late at night. Only a kid, 8/9 years old. The 90’s was awesome. The cloths so colourful. Baggy yet fitting. Funny times. I remember watching this whilst on holiday in some dingy seaside town cinema that was built in the 1940’s. That sweat candy popcorn sugary smell, plus the musk from the carpets. This scene always stayed with me.

He actually looked more real, creepy and menacing with the hood on

This is the best version of Dr. Doom I’ve ever seen in a live action movie.

I remember seeing this movie with my friends and actually being stuck in our seats from that thing. About two years ago we found the movie on DVD and watched it again. Now it’s basically a feature length Try Not To Laugh Challenge.

I don't know, but I find that CGI to be very good within the context of the movie and I think it blends very well with the rest of it.

It's stunning they didn't just chuck Dr. Smith in the air lock the minute they got back to the ship.

At what point during the development process did making the villain a giant spider ever seem like a good idea?

Ironically, Gary Oldman was originally going to voice General Grievous. After watching Clone wars 2003, I can see why he was cast as Grievous, because this voice almost matches that voice. Specifically the one from 2003.
