[SPOILER ALERT] This video imagines a young mum talking to her son on graduation day this March. She is crouching down to talk to him…saying all the sweet things a mum says on this special day, with all the pride and joy she feels…only for the camera to pan around to her son’s face…and we see that she has been talking to a gravestone the whole time…
And that video is being watched by an anime girl, who imagines then imagines typical life/typical family scenes she takes for granted.
In the January 1st earthquake in Japan, a mother had her 5-year-old son rushed to hospital with severe burns. After a few days, he passed away. I was profoundly moved by this, and by what the mum’s experience must be at this usually celebratory time of year.
March is both graduation and cherry blossom season here in Japan, and it is filled with happy graduation and cherry blossom songs. 🌸🌸
It greatly pained me to think about that mum, who will not get to experience her son’s graduation from daycare this year, and that jump in to elementary school, which is a big milestone here. I just felt like there was no song out there for her at this time.
I dedicate my song and video here to her.
Kanoa, who plays the part of the mum, and is one of the lead actresses in last year’s major Japanese movie “Mimi wo Sumaseba.” I was also in it, our 3rd movie together.
Life is very complicated right now, with so much happening at the same time. This is a song that says “I hear you. I see you. I am trying to understand how you feel.”
