When I made the first video on my truck radios, I said there would be follow-ups later. This is the first of many - The Yaesu FTM-500DR radio was released shortly after I made the first video, so today I install it in the mobile Hamshack. Plus I go into further details about the Lido Mounts that I used in my complete install.

you should try it with the external speaker plugged in too, it sounds even better that way than just the head speaker

Jason, What antennas are you using with these radios? Have you made a video about the antennas?

Jason, I have looked all over the Lido mounting sight and cannot find the clamps you used in your truck to clamp your radio to the pipes.

How did you build, or where did you buy, your mounting rails/tubes you're using to mount your control heads? At 5:14, for example, those black tubes look a bit like an extended suitcase handle but more durable. Is it some sort of pvc or pipe you can get at a hardware store? I'm intrigued.

Love your custom built mounting system Jason ! Very well done and allows a ton of flexibility. The FTM-500 is a strong candidate for my first mobile rig but won't happen until I buy my next vehicle.

you should have added some footage on your antenna set-up on the truck as well (Ham-Antenna, not radio! ha!)

I just do not understand this radio's lack of cross-band repeat. The price should reflect that. Great video, though.

I heard John say that the Rail mount with the button release is available to have one for a go-box. I can't find it anywhere. Do you have a part number? Jim

You still have plenty of space around the passenger seat area to install 6 or 7 more radios. Don’t get lazy, finish the job!

I bet your radio mount in the summer gets PIPING HOT before the AC kicks in!

I checked out the FTM 500 today at HRO. Nice rig, especially that spectrum display. I’m glad I don’t need a mobile rig right now. That would cost me. I might be moved by a sale, though. 😊

Dang! I thought you bought a Discovery 2 from the thumbnail. That would be an upgrade! Yes, I drive one.

So many questions after seeing that multi-head setup and radio install in your truck. I've been wanting to install a couple of my other mobile rigs in my truck as well, and I would be very interested in seeing you do a video or three on how to handle power to the multiple rigs, avoiding interference among multiple antennas (?) and that big ol' battery in the back! Good stuff!

I really like that T-shirt. When are you going to offer them for sale on your site?

I might consider something like the 500 if ot had a built in soundcard for Packet/Winlink. I rather have the modem over the spectrum didplay on a non all mode rig!

Where would you mount an antenna if you had a cab over camper? I had this dinky little mag base I used on my truck temporarily while I looked up a good antenna that I wanted to permanently mount. And to be honest I made more long distance contacts with that little mag base $30 antenna than I am with my comet $70ish dollar antenna. The comet comes in at around 1.2 swr where the mag base the best I could get was 1.6 after moving it around a bunch. I’m litteraly getting about half the range and it’s not hardly readable sometimes. My permanent install location is a fender mount so it clears my camper. I’ve checked all my grounds and the hood should be acting as my ground plane just fine

Noob here. Can you discuss functional testing of a new radio setup, specifically evaluation of noise floor on a radio without a waterfall display? thx!
