Missed opportunity to use a transparent shell so the board could shine

That was some intricate soldering. I’m lucky if I get the motherboard let alone an individual chip leg

Nintendo would lead the retro market, if they sold cpu and ram chips for old gameboys. Literally just sell the parts and let modders go to work

@OP. For soldering anything with many legs, grab a hollow point or cupped solder tip. These tips are used specifically for this purpose. The method is known as “drag soldering”. Essentially, flux up the legs, add a bit of solder to your “cup”, and quickly drag your tip ONCE across all the legs on a single side. 4 sides=4 individual solder drags. Repeat the process for all sides. You’d THINK this process would bridge all of the legs together, but it is in fact the opposite. You have a MUCH higher chance of bridging your legs on chips attempting to individually solder each leg. It takes some practice to get used to it, so it’s better to master this skill on dispensable hardware rather than something that’s important to you. Another pro tip: when using the hot air rework station, kapton tape is your best friend. Kapton is incredibly heat resistant and will act as a shield for when you’re blowing that hot air on to your board. Sometimes, when parts are close together, you can accidentally wet the solder on parts you didn’t intend to hit. If you make a quick box out of kapton surrounding the part you intend to take off, you significantly reduce your chances of accidents! Hope this helps!! Happy soldering!!!

This is a mode I can enjoy! Every modder should do this instead of destroying functional original hardware.

you just... made a brain and lungs transplant for a gba without either of those things :O

this seems like so much more effort than it’s worth

wow love your content man, miss the old gameboys. gonna buy myself a new one because of you

I'll be diggily darn damm that is a nice Reworked Gameboy

I’d love to see longform of this content. I think it would be cool if there was like a half hour or hour of footage to put on and listen to you talk about how to fix them and stuff! I’ve always found electrical work in general interesting but too intimidating, it’d be cool to see how it’s done, maybe in a tutorial esq style? I know that’s a lot more work but ik I’d like to see that kinda content at least 😭

This color console and DBZ game were my exact set up games when I first got my GBA 20 years ago😢

Should have used that old case for nostalgia love that indigo hue 😍

Now that looks cool and i like the idea of it being rechargable, but that whole process looks like a pain with the microscopic soldering.. nice job and ill just leave such a delicate job to a pro like you
PhillipJr
Please consider making full length videos of your process. I find these shorts way too short to be engaging and it's so interesting to watch this work being done in more detail.

I definitely need a buy a hot air station one of these days, it would make swapping surface mount caps so much easier too
Suedeash
One piece of advise for future proyects, you can solder one or two legs on opposite sides before using the hot air station so you don't have to worry too much. You pre-tin the corners, and then go to town with the rest!

Just purchased the charamander gba with a rechargeable battery can't wait to get it!!!!

I like when people mod consoles. It keeps making my original unmodified consoles worth more and more.
