Pearl's Spline Shaft Prep For Heat Treatment 2

preview_player
Показать описание
Pearl’s splined shaft is underway once again Prepping the blanks to be within grinding tolerances before the heat treatment is carried out. Modify what is needed to adjust for the new gear bore on the repair we did back a year ago. I got my shit together and the mill is set up and I get the double keyways cut in both shafts. I thought I grabbed some nice close ups of the cut, being the camera was eight feet away from the mill!
Life is good! Cheers, Keith

I could accept the new post-beard-braid Keith, but Keith without the hat is disturbing 😄

Just want to say, this is not a project you see everyday, especially with the heat treating process and all, hope it all goes to plan (I´m sure it will ;-) and it all fits like it's supposed to.

Keith- Great video. I always hold important to make a tight keyseat. If I have a drawing, I will respect the stated tolerance. But if I am milling a part that I designed myself, I always want 2 to 5 tenths press fit on my keys. The .237" end mill you roughed them out with was likely a 6mm cutter. Perfect size for roughing a 1/4" keyseat. Your spindle and collet combination must have extremely low run out. Else that 1/4" on size end mill would have cut oversize. Lucky or good, you tell me! I personally would feel less butt pucker, if I were to use the 6mm end mill to finish, and run up and down the sides of the keyseat feature, slowly creeping up on my final dimension. But for sure, you know your machine as to how it cuts. I know carbide end mills are a few tenths under, and maybe that was part of your calculus. One question, did you add extra depth to account for the material coming of in final grind? Anyhow, I just made a shaft for my Hendey lathe on my channel. It has 3 different diameters, 2 keyseats, and one threaded feature. Not as complicated as a spline shaft, but it sure made me think. I did the heat treat and ground it to size myself. I have it installed in my lathe now, and feeling so much joy for the result that it works well. Anyhow, I still need to fit the gap on my Colchester 17, but other than that, she is a usable lathe. Keep up the good work . --Doozer

I don’t have a nice set up for a travel dial on my quill, so I have to use the knee for precision depth cuts. I wonder if the quill feed has better feel because the knee feed is kind of detached?

Great job once again. Are you doing the heat treat on this apart?

Question: If I understand correctly the part you are making will be hardened and finish ground. Since you are cutting the key seats before the final grind won't the depth of the key seat actually be less than what they are cut now? I know you will be making new keys to fit but what if a job required a certain depth key seat after the final grind. How would you figure how deep to make the key seat to compensate for the final grind? Thanks

I’m sure you know this but they do sale end mills to cut key ways . I’ve used them many times . And I’ve been able to cut the key in one pass .
