The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a 2018 American fantasy adventure film directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston and written by Ashleigh Powell. It is a retelling of E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" and Marius Petipa's The Nutcracker,[1] about a young girl who is gifted a locked egg from her deceased mother, and sets out in a magical land to find the key. The film stars Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy, Eugenio Derbez, Matthew Macfadyen, Richard E. Grant, Misty Copeland, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman. The film was announced in March 2016 with Hallström directing a script by Powell. Much of the cast signed on that summer, and filming began in October at Pinewood Studios, lasting through January 2017. In December 2017, it was announced Joe Johnston would direct a month of reshoots written by Tom McCarthy, with Johnson agreeing to receive co-directing credit. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms premiered in Los Angeles on October 29, 2018, and was released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in the United States on November 2, 2018, in Real D 3D and Dolby Cinema.
Synopsis :
On Christmas Eve, Mr. Stahlbaum gives his daughter Clara and her siblings Christmas presents as their mother's last gift to them. Older sister Louise gets their mother's favorite dress; Clara gets a locked egg-shaped box created by her godfather, Drosselmeyer; their younger brother gets a toy soldier. In order to unlock the box containing a priceless gift from her mother, Clara follows a thread given to her by her godfather, to the associated key in a parallel world. There she meets a soldier named Captain Philip Hoffman, a group of mice, and the various regents that preside over the world's three realms. The Sugar Plum Fairy, regent of the Land of Sweets explains to Clara that her mother, Queen Marie created this world when she was a young girl and animated everyone with a machine. Sugar Plum explains that the machine don't work without a key, but Clara mentions that the mice have it. Clara and other soldiers go on a journey towards Mother Ginger and the mice to get the key back. Tracing the key to the Fourth Realm ruled by Mother Ginger, Clara and Philip must use it to restore harmony to the unstable world. Once Sugar Plum obtains the key, she uses the machine to turn toys into life size soldiers that obey her every command and it can also turn this world’s people into toys, revealing that she had lying and she’s the one all behind the plot, not Mother Ginger (she and her people were only resisting against Sugar Plum’s forces). Clara, Philip, Mother Ginger, and the mice must work together to stop Sugar Plum and protect the Four Realms.
