The church was built in 1952 with the personal work of the Pontian villagers and with stones from the village. However, the creation of Lake Kastraki in 1979 resulted in the transfer of the village. In the new village was built the church of the Assumption of the Virgin and the church in the old village from Assumption was renamed Birth of the Virgin. It celebrates every year on September 8
