WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?

The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.

The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

It's kinda funny that he pointed out that explaining evolution was just explaining the mechanism because, when it comes to a god creating the universe, they NEVER explain the mechanism. Without that, there is no explanation of anything. Defining a god as something with the ability to create a universe is not evidence of anything.

This caller, Chris, raises inane thought processes to a new level of nonsense. This is a classic example of "if you don't think so good don't think so much".

The man is simply incapable. He was better off just saying he believes by faith. He definitely doesn't know what he believes and is very confused. This is what happens when assumptions are met with logic.

BY FAR the biggest section at ANY bookstore or library is the fiction section. So by your logic what does that tell is Chris?

It seems strange that they feel we are trapping them by asking why they believe what they believe. In their mind I must assume that they know they are being illogical or flawed and we are going to point that out to them

I think I'm going to take a break from interacting with theist. Maybe I'll come back in a few decades and see if they've finally found a compelling argument for anything.

Ughh I get so annoyed when one host asks a great question to the caller and there's a pause because the caller is thinking about it and then the other hosts asks a different question totally changing the subject when there could've been a great learning and realization moment. Please please please when one host asks a question please let the caller answer the question before you ask a different one

At one point he said "there has to be..." and then cut himself off. I'm not sure whether he realised that he was about to reveal the fact that he was just making a big old argument from personal incredulity or not but those words demonstrate that he was. Those words really just mean "I can't imagine things being the way they are without a god having done it". That's evidence of a lack of imagination, not of a god.

According to current theory (which means a logical structure that encompasses all known facts into a single paradigm), the universe began as a state of extreme simplicity, which became more and more complex over time. That's called 'entropy'.
It did not start chaotic. It is in the process of *becoming* chaotic as entropy increases.

Assuming that a "mind" had to have created the universe raises more questions than it answers, but then theists seem unable to say "I don't know how the universe got started", even if it had a "start". (Big Bang didn't come from nothing ! )

Chris, no, no no no! In the beginning of big bang there was almost zero chaos aka entropy and it has increased from that point. The universe was in an higher order state than now (much higher). Complexity we have now REQUIRES entropy aka chaos.

…..he may have stopped himself but he was about to say “there has to be”. No, nothing “has” to be. It just comes down to what he believes on faith because he sounds very uncomfortable with the possibility it was all by chance. He doesn’t even stop to consider what he calls “core values” is drastically different based on culture and what’s considered acceptable. You just have to look at the strife going on in the US between the top political parties to know core values are so vastly different between people. I doubt his sense of justice is in anyway similar to my sense of justice. A sense of justice only exists because a justice system exists.

The caller is right that everything is determined. We just don't know how things will go.

Chris: That was nonsensical. The only thing "life" tries to do is survive. When we had no language and we were isolated small groups, all we did was probably hunt for food, build or find shelter, reproduce, and NOTHING ELSE, because there was nothing else TO do. All the things that motivate us NOW is because we have a complex society and we have complex needs. If we had a society so advanced that all our needs were taken care of, we would all lounge around on a beach all day, and there would be ZERO need to do "improve ourselves" or anything else.
