Dugite, one of the deadly venomous Australian brown snakes

Australian brown snakes are deadly venomous elapid snakes. One of them is the Dugite (Pseudonaja affinis). It can grow to about 2 meters and often lives close to people (for example in Perth). Dugite venom is less toxic than venom of the Eastern brown snake (one of the most venomous snakes in the world), but still easily potent enough to kill an adult human. Dugites are fast and very alert snakes. Enjoy watching our video showing these snakes in their natural habitat.

Walking in our park last summer my wife and myself came across a very large Dugite dragging a still alive Bobtailed Goanna across the path.
It was trying to fit the goanna through a ring lock fence on the side.
I learnt two things that day.
Snakes kill and eat Bob Tailed Goannas not the other way around.
Snakes actually very loudly hiss. The snake thought we were going to take the goanna and it turned towards us and paused hissing loudly.
It need not have worried.

This is a fantastic channel, info by text & the sounds of nature, no distracting music & yapping commentary. Subscribed as a worthy channel to subscribe to.

Thanks and great photography. I worked in the field all around the Cooper basin and flood plains, covering hundreds of km's of driving every day so we got to see LOTS of snakes. They are all colour schemes, the predominant species was I believe the king brown. I managed to get a large number of great photos and even a short, maybe 40sec close up video of an inland Taipan hunting the cracks in the Cooper flood plains. He had no concern with us as we followed closely as he checked cracks before quickly moving on then....in an instance he was gone. Love your vids especially Australian inland snakes.

As usual my favorite cinematographers! The Dugite is an interesting animal and people seem to underestimate the strength of it's venom which by now has somewhat evolved to envenomate mammals as well.

Great video! The Brown Snake family resemblance is clear with that face and whilst their venom may not be as toxic as the Eastern or Western Brown they are still deadly to humans with a woman dying in Perth not too long ago.

Excellent your showing the difference in colorization. Light to medium dark brown. You would almost think they were two different breeds of snakes. Thanks for showing this!

I wonder how venomous this species is in comparison to its more well known relatives like the Eastern Brown. Excited for this upcoming “doc” on this species that I have never heard of.

Living Zoology = Aficionado's snake channel. Last video was the lesser covered Highland Copperhead and now we get the enigmatic Dugite. Fingers crossed for next video showcasing the Collet's snake or elusive Stephen's banded snake. Ya know, since you're already down under:)

The venom of Pseudonaja Affinis is potentially one of the most lethal in the world, causing coagulopathic and procoagulant effects.Dugites generally avoid biting humans, but risks of encounters increase when they are most active during the mating season through October and November.

The last human death attributed to a Dugite was in August 2015 in South Fremantle, when a woman was bitten on her heel mid-afternoon while walking alone. She walked home and later collapsed whilst her husband was taking her to her car to transport her to the hospital. The ambulance was called, arriving five minutes later, but medics were unable to revive her.

In January 2011, a seven-year-old Perth boy was bitten and temporarily paralyzed after a Dugite entered his bedroom and wrapped itself around his arm while he slept. After receiving immediate medical attention, he made a full recovery.

In December 2020, a three-year-old girl was bitten by a snake, believed to be a Dugite, while playing in a courtyard at her grandmother's unit complex in Mandurah. Her grandmother quickly immobilised her and wrapped her legs in pressure bandages. The girl was treated with anti-venom in hospital and made a full recovery.

It's the most common snake to see where I live. An it's always given respect. You don't respect a Dugite it will bite you. They are extremely venomous. You have without treatment or first aid about 30 minutes to get to a hospital. Then things get really bad.

So just because you might not know it if you're from another place you should not treat like anything other than. A very dangerous animal. Be calm. Show respect. Leave it alone it won't hurt you.

I always enjoy notes and action behind the scenes. Have you worked with Western Browns yet?
