Today's video is a detailed, but digestible tour of what happens when a baby takes its first breath. Within moments a cascade of events lets the infant transition from being completely dependent on the pregnant person, to being able to breath on it's own.

This should be perfect for those of you looking for an introduction or review of fetal circulation. I tried to keep in from being overwhelming, while providing all the key elements of the anatomy and physiology.

Key Topics:

The Placenta
Umbilical Vein and Arteries
Foramen Ovale Structure and Function
Ductus Arteriosus Structure and Function
Circulation Switching at Birth

If you have a request for the next in depth lesson please leave it in the comments.

I really like these longer videos with anatomy visuals. Ive been interesten in studying something related to health but i still cant decide what. I dint want to be a doctor or a nurse, but i really like learning about health and the effects of things in the body.

You are quite good at explaining all of these bodily process...medical terms explained by comparing them to Harry Potter...and you make us laugh...

Sometimes the delay of clamping can go to 30 minutes. Just depends on the person and baby. As long as the cord is white and not pulsing the clamping can proceed

We have video of my third baby's birth. You can actually see the gush of liquid out of baby's mouth during the final exit through the birth canal.
