If you buy a dozen items at a grocery store, the cashier enters or scans the list of the prices of the items into a cash register, and then the cash register adds up the amounts of each item and generates a total. Summation notation is a formal way we have in math for adding a list of numbers. Sometimes a formula is used to generate the numbers, or they can come from a list, like in a supermarket, or come from an experiment or investigation which generates numerical data.

This video is aimed at grade 11 and 12 math, but could be useful down to grade 9 or 10. This covers some basic ideas about summation and some of the rules. For reasons of keeping the video from being too long, I don't cover summation in conjunction with series. Perhaps for another video.

Nerdy tech details: Filmed with an old Canon Rebel T3i (good enough for 1080p, though!), and assembled with Premiere Elements 15, which processed the video, sound from Audacity, and stills and title cards from MS Word. Music from YouTube's library of theme music.

The following playlists contain videos I made, and also very pertinent videos from other sources for educational purposes.
