In the case of AMC, "predicted fundamentals" aside, the stock is being bought like crazy... the SEC clearly states that when a stock is being purchased a lot stock price goes up, when it is down its because it's not being purchased enough and most likely being shorted. At this point AMC is still being shorted. SEC states that FTDs and naked shorting if to manipulate price falls under illegal naked shorting

You have remembered they did the same thing to GME the return they started returning shares to make it look like they were covering but they were just returning borrowed Shares not covering short positions. My crystal ball says the month of June is going to be insane!

So, if you buy a call option, then the price goes up as you predicted, then close that call position in the money for profit, whoever bought that call will exercise it and you give them 100 shares at the lower price. Or, the person who bought your call option can sale that contract to someone else. If they sale the contract to close it, you don’t have to give the shares anymore if exercised, that person who sold it would have to instead?
