The medical community has never really been able to understand or deal with the number of severely needle phobic people that exist out there. The psychology community also greatly overestimates their ability to treat this issue. These people have up to now been pretty invisible as there is a lot of stigma and little useful help available. There is a lot of frustration on the part of doctors because it is irrational - but OF COURSE it is irrational. That's usually what a phobia is. These people have no more rational control over this than a schizophrenic has over their illness. And add to this the people who have actual functional neurological and functional neurocardiovascular reactions to needle injections (seizures, paralysis, paroxysmal pulmonary hypertension, regular old paroxysmal hypertension, afib, angina, various ventricle dysfunction, neurocardiovasular shock). The "I just laid down and it was better" people are not the severe phobics.
