Chinese officials say economy is getting back on track

Chinese officials said the country is getting back to work now that the epidemic is under control. Officials from China's top economic planning agency told reporters today that at least 90 percent of major industrial producers outside Hubei Province have resumed operations after a stinging halt due to the epidemic.

This would have been ludicrous to say only a month ago, but it is looking like coronavirus may actually end up having greater economic impact on Western economies than on China's economy. The delay in taking drastic action was crucial for Europe and the US. In only two weeks, countries jumped from having less than 100 cases to having thousands. In retrospect, Wuhan was completely locked down when number of cases were increasingly at only 400 per day. Many Western countries have overshot that number, so the impact could be stronger and longer. Worst hit Italy is all but certain to pass China in deaths, and Spain does not look far behind. China's factories reopening is good news for the world, as very soon, China will have to keep countries supplied who are locked in.
