That's not overengineering. That multi-meter will last you an eternity, and It will prevent those embarrassing "oopsies" moments.

I would definitely appreciate it. By forgetting to change the leads, is how all my first meters died, and how I almost killed and have blown the fuses of my current ones.
I have the good practice to always reset the leads to voltage reading after using the meter, but accidents still happen.

I have one of these. German Gossen Metrawatt meters do the same thing, I think a few other Japanese brands do it too.

The same mechanism is present on some Lumel (Poland) multimeters. Great feature, unless it is failure prone in the long term, which hopefully it isn't.

When I was young, I connected my meter incorrectly and blew the fuse. I did not understand that I blew a fuse because I was naive. Eventually I figured it out and thought, the meter should not blow a fuse from this mistake. Many years later I did it again by mistake and I thought, "well it is my mistake". But I see now that Hioki agrees with my younger self.

Me too. I like it. There will come a day that you measure voltage with your connectors on current and blow a fuse. With this it will not happen.

Very cool. There are (cheaper) meters that will beep at you if your probes are in the wrong spot for a given mode, though that doesn’t save you if the probes are already connected to something.
