The reason that the tritone interval sounds horrible is because it’s a frequency ratio of 1.412…:1 or rather, the square root of 2 to 1.

The octave sounds nice because that interval is a ratio of 2:1. The 5th is 3:2, or 1.5:1. The 4th is 4:3, or 1.333:1.

Each note works in powers of 1/12. While this makes for no perfect interval, it makes music work everywhere.

The minor second is a ratio of the 12th root of 2 to 1, very satanic. The major second is the 6th root of 2 to 1, the minor 3rd is the 4th root of 2 to 1, the major third is the 3rd root of 2 to 1, and the tritone is the 2nd root of 2 to 1.

This is how they can sound so dissonant and evil: these frequencies are literally born from irrational numbers, and many thought this was a sign of evil, well, delusional Ancient Greek philosophers did, anyway.

I could be wrong but it seems that every claxin I have ever heard is in the tritone. I know the one in the building I live in for the fire alarm is at least because even though it goes off every few months and I never smell smoke I need to get the hell out of Dodge.
