Raised Jugular Venous Pressure

Elevated jugular venous pressure is a manifestation of abnormal right heart dynamics, mostly commonly reflecting elevated pulmonary capillary wedge pressure from left heart failure. This usually implies fluid overload state.

The JVP is said to be elevated if the vertical distance between the sternal angle and the highest point of the pulse is greater than 4cm.

Causes:
-Heart failure.
-Constrictive pericarditis (JVP increases on inspiration - called Kussmaul's sign).
-Cardiac tamponade.
-Fluid overload - renal causes
