BMW X5 N57 Timing Chain Stretch and Rattle E70 F15

Bmw n57 diesel engine from an E70 30d timing chain stretch causing the engine to rattle at idle and get worse with revs. The top timing chain can be inspected with just the valve cover removed. The lower chain can be inspected the same way but requires a borescope camera to accurately see the extension of the tensioner piston, but realistically requires the engine to be removed and the timing chain covers removed. The oil pump chain also shouldn't be overlooked, as these can stretch too and be noisy at the back of the sump where it joins the gearbox bellhousing.

Thank you for such a informative video. Would you recommend changing the timing chain with gears an tensioners before they make any noise? Have you looked in the cylinders of car with diesel i the fuels? I wonder if they fail later on because of wear on the cylinder walls.

Very informative. Problem for me now is I never knew, I have the N57 2016 F15 40d, bmw service pack so every 19000 miles not Km 😲 x 3 services and one at 16000 miles, it's always had Shell helix ultra ect c3 from new so yes I understand now the engine/chain will have a certain degree of heavy wear so now I'm out of warranty if I service with the same oil every 6000 miles will that help reduce any further heavy/significant wear. I have used a stethoscope on the rear on the engine a few times on cold and then later whilst warm, no change in sound/rattles on either test.

Engine don’t need to be removed to replace chains, tensioners etc. Gearbox removal will be enough and than we can start the job

The thing is ts not only bmws problem but all three - bme, mb, audi. Older engines did not have any problems not until 500kkm

Hi some help pls, if a chain has slipped off or broke does the engine still crank?
Its still cranking
I looked throught the camshaft hole at top rear top and its like it wants to rotate but is stuck

the m57 has an timing chain oil spray nozzle does the n57 have one? i looked but didn't see one but i've never worked on a n57
