Swapping a Turbo Honda K24 into a Ferrari 308 GTBi - Ep. 19 - Fabricating New Chassis Tubes

I'm thrilled to finally be at the start of fabrication for this project, although it's off to a slow start... filming and fabricating simultaneously is a challenge!
We've got two new tubes in place in the Ferrari 308, both to provide strength in place of the chassis tubes we cut out in the previous episodes.

I realize I totally forgot to explain what tubing I am using and why I chose round tube over square tubing! I'll save the latter for the next episode, but the short answer on material is I have chosen to use 1.5" .095-wall DOM tubing for the major structure. Overkill, but undoubtedly more than stout enough!

4:32 Quick tip when welding tubing closed make sure to have a vent hole not only can you use said hole for back purging for a stronger weld it also acts as a vent for any hot air to stop any blowouts on your welds. ;)

do we have a net weight loss on the beard trim?

Just my 2 cents, use long sleeves plus gloves when tig welding to prevent UV burns.

Best build series on YouTube. Really enjoying the work. I wonder how many ferrari purists have clicked that thumb down button but who cares, its your car and its going to be an incredible machine when it's finished.

Great work man! You come by your skills so honstly. Sucks that you feel the need to defend yourself from shitty comments. Just do you and keep building something awesome 👌

Miller...best stuff out there. Have a Miller Multimatic AC/DC 220...never let me down...unlike the multiple warranty issues I had with my previous Lincoln AC/DC 205.

once i saw you remove the trunk, i wondered if you were going to take out that tube! i think taking the straight tube back out and welding the 2 bent pieces to it on the bench seems a good way to do it.

this may be late in the game but I hope at some point you bought yourself a nice ban saw for cutting tubing instead of all that grinding and standing belt sander also great to have in a shop.

Finnegan's Garage just did a video on tube bending during his C10 build series, and the wasted almost NO tubing. Worth a watch!

Really enjoying your project so far! Can't wait for the next episode. The trunk floor cut out could make space for some interesting aero?

If you've got the film to spare I'd be glad to watch 20+ minute videos of the entire process. I've heard Youtube analytics suggest videos shorter than that but this isn't a top 10 list, this is some intricate work you're doing.

Edit* you explained this in the next video. Loving the series!

Did you ever think about using chromoly for your cage or bracing? It’s substantially lighter and stronger than steel but it is pricey. It also welds similarly to plain mild steel so it could be a good option.
