What is Parent Coaching in ABA?

On Ontario, the wait for ABA services can be very long. Some parents wonder what they can do while they're waiting to begin services. Parent Coaching!

Parent coaching is when a parent works directly with the Board Certified Behaviour Analyst or Senior Therapist. Once you've identified what you'd like to work on, they will ask you to take some data about the behaviour that you'd like to work on. It's important to take data and track the behaviour before, during and after the intervention. This behaviour will be analyzed to evaluate how effective the intervention was.

The therapist will likely use a strategy called Behavioural Skills Training (BST) to teach you. There are 4 steps in BST: instruction, modeling, roleplay and feedback. Using these steps will ensure you're accurately and effectively using the strategy.

Parent coaching can be time limited or continuous.
